Was at a convention at the Anaheim convention center for about a week and went there every night. It was called the Cowboy Boogie Company in 1994. One of the dance instructors there was a guy name Freddy Falgout. It was all country and western dancing then and Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday nights were awesome with loads of people. Met th ehead waitress Donna and another one named Shannon and had nice times with them too. Its too bad it had to change then close. Nothing good lasts forever.

Lots of fun (plus lots of cute hippie girls on the FM side) here in the early 70s. The AM was typical bubblegum fare with fast talking DJs. Ryan Seacrest would have fit right in. The FM side was album rock and automated most of the time except for Sundays when Jack Snyder had a live show. The rest of us manned the People's Phone & took requests, gave concert info & took free want ads! As Captain Nemo the waterbed man said in his ads: "Say Hablar Espanol. (But not too good, Ar Ar!)"

Used to be a strawberry field before the lumberyard. Back in the early 70s some of us at the KEZY radio station (the hippie FM side) would sneak over & pick strawberries to eat while at work.

Harmony Park Ballroom was also home base for Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys in 1953 with daily radio broadcasts over KXLA and dances every Friday and Saturday nights. A live Texas Playboys radio broadcast from Harmony Park is available on the album "Complete 1953 Radio Broadcasts" -- available on YouTube. Announcer Lou Stevens gives the address as Broadway and Manchester in Anaheim.

So, with rumors(?) that there will be a Star Wars themed land (since Disney and LucasArt shacked up), will Star Tours move out?

Wow, I remember this location back in the 80's. There was a drive in behind it and a Toy City on the other side of Lemon St which was next to a Jack Lalanne gym. The See's candy on the other side of Orangthorpe is still there to this day. The other Zody's I used to frequent was in Santa Ana off of Grand and 17th. I believe all Zody's were converted into the Giant stores back in 86 or 87. Not sure if the old Anaheim location is were the new Walmart stands now. The Santa Ana location changed from a Zody's to a Giant to a Ralphs then a Food for less and is now vacant.

  • Harmony Park Ballroom (site), Gordon T. McClelland (guest) wrote 9 years ago:
Gordon T. McClelland Just for the record, the last rock concert at the Harmony Park Ballroom took place in 1971. John Gardell; Orange Counties premier concert promoter of that era did the show. The top billed band was The Long John Baldry Blues Band Baldry was a legend in England but was just becoming known in America due to his new album that included the song "Don't Try To Lay No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll". The band included truly great musicians including Mickie Waller on drums and Pete Sears on bass. This particular night Ron Wood sat in and played guitar, so it was an epic show. Don't recall the piano players name but he was exceptional too. A local band from the South Coast called The Coolie Loach opened the show with a strong set. Kind of an odd lineup for the final music concert at the Harmony Park, but rest assured it closed with some fine music and a packed crowd of enthusiastic rock music fans.

  • Former site of Concrete Wave Skatepark (1970's), Scoobey (guest) wrote 9 years ago:
My buddy and I came down there circa 1978 with our Northern California longboards -- home-widened Trackers, Road Rider Sixes, etc. His board was a spoon-shaped cutaway that didn't even have a platform for his rear foot; he rode it in full tuck. We loosened our trucks and took that snake run by storm! Three months later one of the major boardmakers came out with a new model using the beveled bottom my buddy had invented for both our decks (ie, the strip down the middle where the trucks mounted was thicker for strength, then the bottom tapered up to about 3/8" thick at the edges for wheel clearance and to reduce weight). We had a blast and taught the SoCal pool-riders a couple new tricks! Thanks for the memory. -Scoobey

I remember the first time I rode the snake run. I'd never ridden in a skatepark before. And I fell. Ohhhh...it hurt. Landed on my hands and jammed my wrists. I had to wait to come back after a few days and try it again. Got to where I could carve through it and get up near the lip. I think Russ Howell was the manager.
